Some departments and courses require the use of the Modern Language Association (MLA) style for citing references in papers. It is important to remain consistent within the paper and to use the style recommended by your instructor.

The purpose of documentation is to:

  • Identify (cite) other people’s ideas and information used within your essay or term paper, and
  • Indicate the authors or sources of these in a Works Cited list at the end of your paper.
